The detectives were making a sweep of everyone’s rooms, including the staff, and Blaire found her breaths coming and going too quickly. This had happened before.

Her mother let an ICE officer in. And they weren’t gentle with their home. There were things she didn’t want to be questioned about by the detectives, and she slipped the picture of her mother she had with her into her bra.

“Feels like high school,” Tristan said, coming up to her. His shoulders were tense. “K-9 unit found the weed in my locker.”

Blaire did her best to look amused, even as the detectives moved her mattress around, looking inside her pillowcase and suitcase. Her bag of trail mix sat on the comforter, and Tristan bumped her.

“You didn’t share?”

She laughed. “That’s mine!” she said. “We don’t have to share everything.”

He squinted at her, and she pressed her lips together. “Fine. What about I give you some of the chocolate stash at the bottom of that bag?” she said, nodding to her over-the-shoulder bag.

Tristan crossed his arms. “I’d be placated,” he said.

“Big word.”

“Big lies. Keeping trail mix from me.”
